<div class="twitterbutton" style="float: left; padding-right: 5px;"><a href="http://twitter.com/share" class="twitter-share-button" data-count="vertical" data-text="Boo for the University of California, Berkeley Wellness Letter" data-via="DiaVickery" data-url="http://acugateway.com/WordPress/boo-for-the-university-of-california-berkeley-wellness-letter/" data-lang="en" data-related=""></a></div>{"id":28,"date":"2009-06-15T12:00:54","date_gmt":"2009-06-15T20:00:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/acugateway.com\/WordPress\/?p=28"},"modified":"2009-06-15T21:09:47","modified_gmt":"2009-06-16T05:09:47","slug":"boo-for-the-university-of-california-berkeley-wellness-letter","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/acugateway.com\/WordPress\/boo-for-the-university-of-california-berkeley-wellness-letter\/","title":{"rendered":"Boo for the University of California, Berkeley Wellness Letter"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Up until the June 2009 issue, I\u2019ve had very few complaints with the UC Berkeley Wellness Letter.\u00a0\u00a0 They\u2019re a pretty conservative publication but they\u2019ve had interesting articles and have seemed to be pretty balanced, until this issue.<\/p>\n<p>In the <em>Wellness made easy<\/em> section on the last page, they published this:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>Avoid \u201cherbal\u201d or \u201cnatural\u201d weight-loss supplements.<\/strong>\u00a0 The FDA recently warned that dozens of products contain hidden and potentially hazardous drugs such as diuretics or laxatives, or else risky prescription anti-obesity medication, often combined with a witch\u2019s brew of other ingredients.\u00a0 The supplements are usually sold on the Internet, but some, such as StarCaps (now recalled) are also sold in health-food stores and drugstores.\u00a0 Most are made in China.\u00a0 There are no safe and effective dietary supplements for long-term weight loss.<\/p>\n<p>Wow.\u00a0 So many things pop off the page in this blurb, the most upsetting being the combination of \u201cwitch\u2019s brew\u201d and \u201cmade in China\u201d.\u00a0 I checked this out by having some folks I know read the article to see what their reaction was.\u00a0 They all looked at me and asked a version of the same question \u201cAre the herbal formulae you prescribe safe?\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The answer is an emphatic \u201cYes!\u201d followed by a longer explanation of how, as a licensed acupuncturist in California I have been trained in prescribing these substances and how I buy my teapills (pre-packaged herbal formulae) from manufacturers who meet and exceed GMP standards.<\/p>\n<p>As a practitioner of Traditional Oriental Medicine, I have an uphill battle in America.\u00a0 My patients know the medicine works; herbs, acupuncture, dietary advice, lifestyle advice, exercise; they all work together to help my patients become healthier.\u00a0\u00a0 But when publications like the UC Berkeley Wellness Letter start throwing these scary phrases around, it has a strong impact on people who could benefit from T.O.M. but are hesitant.<\/p>\n<p>This is what I sent to the Editors of the Wellness Letter:<\/p>\n<p>Dear Editors,<\/p>\n<p>I am a California licensed acupuncturist and I wanted to register my disappointment with the &#8220;Avoid \u2018herbal\u2019 or \u2018natural\u2019 weight loss supplements\u201d article in the Wellness made easy section of the June 2009 issue.<\/p>\n<p>I don&#8217;t object to the information, but I am offended by the phrasing &#8220;. . . combined with a witch&#8217;s brew. \u00a0. \u00a0. &#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>Part of my training is to concoct prescriptions by combining substances in the Materia Medica of my profession, something I was extensively trained in and have earned the rights and privilege to do by passing the most comprehensive and difficult licensing examination in the country.<\/p>\n<p>Just because your authours don\u2019t understand the theories behind the substances in the offending products, doesn\u2019t mean they\u2019re ineffectual or dangerous.<\/p>\n\n<div class=\"twitterbutton\" style=\"float: left;
